Bad Student Submits

The alarm on her phone went off at 10 am, and Liz immediately presses snooze. For most people 10 am was a great time to get up, perhaps even too late for your average 9 to 5er, but not for her. In Liz’s defense there was a big beer pong tournament yesterday, just like every Monday, and she could not skip it, as she was also the referee. A great side job, that paid little, but got you free beer. The alarm went off again and she snoozed it once more. As a 20-year-old college student, this was not out of the ordinary, she liked to party and there was nothing worse than going to a lecture hung over. In her mind she was already working on an excuse not to go. After all, what was the point of going, if she was going to have a headache the whole time, and not remember anything anyway. Besides she had not prepared. So, it was decided. When the alarm went off once again, she canceled it, and went back to sleep, uninterrupted for a couple of more hours.

At 12:15 pm, she was already in the shower and by 12:45 there was a frozen, supermarket pizza in the oven. This was college life. Hungover, missing lectures, eating bad, tasteless, but cheap food. And partying, a lot of partying. Tonight, there would be another one. It was a hard life that required a lot of discipline. It was not always easy to fight off the hang over and start delivering yourself another one, for the next morning. But Liz had to go tonight. There was a good chance she would get lucky. This chick she had made out with was very likely to be there. It had been a couple of dry months for here, and she was really looking forward to getting laid. After the pizza though, she had to do some work.

Liz was not the best student and it would probably be closer to the truth to say that that she was the worst one. Bad attendance, grades and general attitude. She did not do homework often, but today it was mandatory. There was an important presentation tomorrow, worth 25% of her total grade. There was still some work to be done, but Liz was quite proud of herself. She had not left it all, for the last minute, a sure sign of maturity. It was a hard course and she was sure to fail, if the presentation was not good. The professor, Dr. Stern, lived up to her name, and then some. A PhD in psychology, she was a very respectable and disciplined member of the faculty and did not like Liz one bit. It was nothing personal, she simply liked discipline and Liz did not seem to have any.

It was 9pm by the time Liz was done with her spaghetti, another student classic, and it was time for her to get going, she had arranged to meet up and have pre-drinks, with some friends.
